Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), which is also called an acquired brain injury or a head injury, occurs when there is sudden trauma inflicted on the brain that causes damage. This can either result from the head suddenly or violently hitting an object or when an object pierces the skull and enters the brain tissue.

The symptoms of TBI can vary from mild, moderate, or severe depending on the severity of the injury. A person faced with mild TBI can remain conscious or experience a loss of consciousness for a few seconds or minutes. Headaches, confusion, lightheadedness, dizziness, blurred vision or tired eyes, ringing in the ears, bad taste in the mouth, and fatigue or lethargy are signs of a traumatic brain injury. Moderate and severe cases of traumatic brain injuries have many of the same symptoms as a mild case. The difference is that the symptoms don’t go away but they may get worse. In addition, symptoms include repeated vomiting or nausea, convulsions or seizures, inability to wake up, dilation of one or both pupils, slurred speech, weakness or numbness in the extremities, loss of coordination, and increased confusion, restlessness, or agitation.

Once a traumatic brain injury takes place, doctors can do little to reverse the initial brain damage caused by the trauma. Medical personnel will try to stabilize the patient and focus on preventing further brain injury. Roughly half of all people that experience moderate to severe TBI face surgery in the future to remove or repair hematomas or contusions.

TBI disabilities depend on the severity and location of the injury, the age and the general health of the victim. Common disabilities include problems with sensory processing, communication, behavior, mental health, and cognition. The most serious conditions include comas, vegetative states, and persistent vegetative states.
