Seizures
Seizures in the brain are caused by excessive neuronal activity. Neurons are the electrical connections that effectively wire our brains. The serious kinds of seizures are called epileptic seizures and can result in convulsions, variations in the mental state, and jerky movements.
The symptoms of seizures are many and often complex. Essentially, they cause variations in how the body moves and functions. They can last for a few seconds, or they can continue non-stop. Sometimes, a person experiencing a seizure might only feel numb, might lose some memory, or might see flashes of light.
There are many types of seizures, based upon where the seizure originates in the brain. The two broadest types of seizures are focal/partial seizures or generalized seizures. Focal seizures are often further sub-divided as well.
It is important to note the distinction between provoked and unprovoked seizures. Unprovoked seizures occur without any warning or readily preventable cause. Provoked seizures, on the other hand, are caused by factors that can be addressed. Some of these factors include:
- Head injuries
- Withdrawal from drugs
- Exposure to bright lights and extreme flashes
- Having a fever
Seizures are scary occurrences. They often catch people off guard, and if they are not addressed quickly by medical professionals they can eventually build up into more serious cases.
