Sports and Traumatic Brain Injury: Information for Parents
No parents want to see their children suffer in any way, shape, or form. Even if their children have a cold, parents worry a great deal. Because parents care so much about their children, many parents wonder what they need to know about traumatic brain injury (TBI) and how their children might be affected by it.
Sources of TBIs
Children are at risk of sustaining traumatic brain injury as a result of three main causes. One cause is sports activity. Boxing, soccer, and football are the most likely sports from which children can sustain brain injury, as large amounts of force are applied to the head repeatedly. In soccer, heading the ball is dangerous and may cause injuries. In boxing, the continuous punched to the face can lead to serious brain injury. In football, brain injuries are associated with tackling. Of these three sports, football is the worst, responsible for about 250,000 injuries, even though helmets help prevention efforts.
Other sports/activities that have a high likelihood of causing traumatic brain injury are skiing, baseball, horseback riding, and skateboarding. In 1997, there were estimated 2,600 head injuries to children only while skiing. In 1999, there were an estimated 6,000 head injuries while horseback riding. To prevent brain injury in all of these sports, the simple act of wearing a helmet is essential.
