Traumatic Brain Injury Stats
Traumatic brain injury has been called a silent epidemic by some. Indeed, it affects many people who do not even know it. Traumatic brain injury, also known as TBI, occurs when someone’s brain suffers a force that causes it to hit the side of the skull and get damaged or when something punctures the brain. The effects of TBI can be mild or severe. They can range from temporary memory loss to death.
The Department of Health and Human Services Center for Disease Control and Prevention had compiled some statistics about traumatic brain injury in the United States. In the U.S., there are about 1.4 million individuals who suffer traumatic brain injury per year. Of those 1.4 million, 1.1 million are treated in an emergency room and released; 235,000 are hospitalized for extended periods of time, and 50,000 die of traumatic brain injury.
It is important to remember that the 1.4 million are only those reported at hospitals; there are others who suffer TBI but do not go to hospitals, so they are not included. It is not known how many people suffer TBI but do not get reported.
The CDCP also has statistics about how TBI usually occurs. 28% of traumatic brain injuries result from falls. 20% occur because of car crashes or accidents, while 11% result because of assaults. The remaining 19% are caused by “Struck by/against events.” In warzones, blasts are by far the leading causes of TBI.
There is also information about which groups are most likely to suffer TBI. Males are 1.5 times more likely than female be victims of TBI. Moreover, children from ages 0 to 4 and 15 to 19 are at highest risk than any other age group. Furthermore, some military duties are more risky than others. Finally, African Americans are at higher risk than any other group of dying fro TBI.
