Anoxic Brain Injuries
An anoxic brain injury occurs when there is a lack of oxygen supply to the brain. For injury to occur, this must take place for several minutes or longer. In fact, brain cells begin to die in the brain after only four minutes of oxygen starvation. This is one of the more rare forms of brain injury, but it does occur.
There are several causes of anoxic brain injuries. In general though, it is caused by a blood clot that keeps oxygenated blood from reaching the brain. There are also forms of lung disease that prevent oxygen from going into the blood stream. Anoxic brain injury can also be caused by exposure to poisonous chemical or toxins that keep the blood from accepting oxygen. Another possible case is exposure to carbon monoxide, which binds to the oxygen receptors in the blood, keeping oxygen from being transported throughout the body.
Symptoms of Anoxic Brain Injury
There are numerous symptoms that can take effect as a result of anoxic brain injuries. Most commonly, individuals may report that they have a headache; they might appear to be confused or exhibit a lack of concentration and a decreased attention span. Symptoms might be as severe as a periodic loss of consciousness or even mood swings.
Anoxic brain injuries can stem from a number of different human activities. People who have choked, suffered from suffocation, brain tumors, strokes or heart attacks, may experience anoxic brain injuries.
