Concussions are the most common, but least serious, type of a traumatic brain injury. They vary in degree and severity just like everything else. They are basically a head injury with a temporary loss of brain function.
A concussion, while relatively minor, can cause of varity of physical, cognitive, and emotional symptoms. The most commonly affected mental faculties are memory, attention, and the speed at which information is processed.
This type of traumatic brain injury is caused by a blow to the head or by extreme acceleration or deceleration forces without a direct impact. While a concussion is generally not viewed as the most serious of traumatic brain injuries, repeated concussions may cause permanent, cumulative brain damage.
In adults, the two most common causes of concussions are auto accidents and falls. They are often caused from sporting injuries and bike accidents.
In the medical community, there is a debate as to whether a concussed brain is structurally damaged the way a brain is in other types of brain injury or whether the concussed brain involves mainly a loss of function without structural changes.
Concussions are also called mild brain injury, mild traumatic brain injury, mild head injury, and minor head trauma. Minor head trauma is often treated as a narrower category than the rest of the alternate names.
