Coping with Traumatic Brain Injuries
When we think of traumatic brain injuries, we almost always only think of the victim and his or her accident. But in these situations, we must not forget the effects that traumatic brain injuries have on the family members as well. More often then not, coping with the brain injury is a much more trying experience than the injury itself, for the individual and also the family.
Usually the ability for the individual and his or her family members to cope is a function of their coping strategy and attitude toward the situation. Coping most often takes place immediately after the accident has occurred. Initially, shock and denial take the stage, as the recognition of the severity of the event is apparent. Individuals may feel a new sense of reality, or may feel lost, without a direction in determining what to do next. This occurs most often with those individuals who have sustained long-term impairment due to injury.
Later, grief sets in and members of the family may go through periods during which they experience feelings of depression, anxiety, and rage. Over time, however, these feelings may subside, as there is an immediate need to protect the welfare and livelihood of the victim.
Sometimes, though, the family may not be able to take the financial burden of the associated medical costs. When all avenues seem to be exhausted, there may be nowhere to turn. In these moments, it may be appropriate to consult with a traumatic brain injury law specialist who might be able to find other ways to help your family.
