Treating Sleep Disorders Connected to Traumatic Brain Injury
When a person suffers a traumatic brain injury, it is very common that the individual will also experience some type of sleep disorder as a result of his or her injury. People who suffer complain that while they may be able to fall asleep with relative ease, they wake up frequently throughout the night and find themselves fully awake by 4 or 5 o’clock in the morning.
Getting a good night’s sleep is vital for people recovering from a traumatic brain injury, as both the brain and the rest of the body need a chance to rest and recuperate. If you are experiencing trouble sleeping due to a traumatic brain injury, here are some tips for getting the rest you need.
- “Train” your body to sleep by going to bed at the exact same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning—even on the weekends. This practice will “signal” to your body that it is time to sleep, and you can hopefully condition yourself to sleep soundly during the hours you designate.
- Avoid exercising late in the evening and don’t consume caffeine. Both of these things will keep you awake by making it harder to fall asleep initially and remain sleeping through the night.
- Set the temperature of your room to a moderate temperature. This will prevent you from waking up because the room is either too hot or too cold.
- If absolutely necessary, you can talk to your doctor about possible medication. While there are “sleeping pills” available, most doctors will not want to prescribe them to someone who has experienced a traumatic brain injury. Instead, they may prescribe a low-dose anti-depressant to help you sleep through the night
Sleep disorders can be frustrating and exhausting, but there are things that you can do to help yourself get the rest you need.
